Clarifying Purpose in Strategic planning

Are you struggling with staying on the path to success?

Every sports team’s goal is to win the championship, but not every team has the strategy to get there. In the end, the most prepared mentally and physically win.

Every organization’s goal is to be successful! The goal (where you’re going) and the strategic plan (how to get there) are two different things.

Preparation, strategic planning, starts with everyone being aligned with the same purpose.

What is purpose?

Purpose is why the organization exists, where it’s going, and how to get there.

The Why? Mission - It’s the driving force that gets you out of bed in the morning, excited for the day ahead. It’s more than work; it’s an impact for the greater good.

The Where? Vision -  A future destination is cast. The goal is to help clarify where the company is going so that the team can choose priorities that will help get them there.

The Way? Core Values - 3-5 words that exemplify how decisions are made and how people are expected to treat each other, clients, vendors, and the community. These should be non-negotiable.

If you don’t have a mission, vision, and core values, you need it. If you don’t know how to create it, check out our previous blog, What is a Healthy Workplace?

Now that we know what purpose is, why is it important in strategic planning?

Without a greater vision, your team will be focused on the day-to-day issues versus the big overarching destination. Day-to-day issues can overtake the session and strategic planning turns into problem-solving.

All too often, teams get off track and don’t move forward because they don’t really know where they want to go. Clarity is key.

Developing a strategic plan can be both overwhelming and exciting! Clarifying the purpose of a company (the mission, vision, and core values) is the essential foundation on which to begin strategic planning. Otherwise, how do you know where you really want to go?

Defining these is the only way to create the kind of clarity a team needs in order to create a strategic plan and achieve the objectives. The mission, vision, and core values act as a guide to keep everyone moving in the same direction. Flourishing companies are agile enough to withstand the ebbs and flows of a bad economy. The same works for sports teams. Even when the best players go down, the back up teammates come in and perform because they are clear about the greater purpose.
